Consumer Advocates Blast Congress and Health Plans for Choosing to Abandon Coloradans

The Colorado Consumer Health Initiative released the following statement in response to the announcement that Rocky Mountain Health Plans will no longer offer individual market plans in the Denver area and Anthem is withdrawing its plans from various counties.

This statement can be attributed to Adam Fox, Deputy Director of the Colorado Consumer Health Initiative:

“This is what happens when Republicans in Congress choose to strangle the Affordable Care Act. Their decision to cut health care and end the tax credits that significantly improved affordability for Coloradans is wreaking havoc on our individual market. Their short-sighted actions are leading to massive increases in the premiums Coloradans will pay, with increases of 170% on average for consumers who will still have access to tax credits, and even higher increases for those who will lose tax credits altogether. While Anthem and Rocky are responding to the damage caused by Congress, and to expected losses of 100,000 Coloradans or more from the individual market, they are leaving Coloradans in the lurch to protect their profits. Their decisions underscore the need for Congress to act now to extend the tax credits and for state action to protect Coloradans by bolstering our state affordability programs to minimize the harm and losses in coverage.”

If Anthem and Rocky proceed with withdrawing from these areas in the individual market, nearly 96,000 Coloradans currently enrolled in a plan with Anthem or Rocky will need to select a plan with another insurer during the open enrollment period that begins November 1.

Colorado Consumer Health Initiative is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, membership-based group advocating for equitable access to high-quality, affordable health care. CCHI serves Coloradans whose access to health care and financial security are compromised by structural barriers, affordability, poor benefits, or unfair business practices of the health care industry.
