Mission

The Colorado Consumer Health Initiative (CCHI) is a member-based nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to ensuring barrier-free access to quality, affordable healthcare for all Coloradans.  CCHI brings together a unified statewide voice for healthcare reform, engaging, educating, and empowering consumers and advocacy organizations to identify solutions that overcome barriers to healthcare.  CCHI addresses the healthcare crisis through policy, legislation, outreach, education, and organizing with consumers and groups throughout Colorado.

 

Position Description

The Outreach and Education Coordinator is part of an integrated team in a small, dynamic nonprofit agency based in Denver.  The focus of this position is building a strong, engaged, statewide organization of consumers, members, partners, and allies dedicated to expanding access to healthcare.  The Coordinator will design and implement a strategic outreach and education plan that supports CCHI’s mission and supervise staff in this program.

 

Responsibilities

CCHI staff work closely in a team environment to carry out the mission and goals of the organization.  Primary responsibilities for this position include:

 

Outreach and Organizing

  • Write, edit, and send e-action alerts on policy and legislative issues
  • Maintain GetActive database and use it effectively to reach constituents
  • Gather and organize consumer experiences for the Power of One storybank.
  • Field calls from the community to assist in troubleshooting healthcare barriers and provide with appropriate community referrals
  • Organize testimony, public input, and activities that support CCHI’s advocacy efforts
  • Develop and implement strategies for expanding CCHI’s list of activists, donors and supporters
  • Represent the organization at relevant community and coalition meetings
  • Organize annual Healthcare Day of Action lobby day including facilitation of planning committee and recruitment of co-sponsors
  • Oversee maintenance of a community events calendar and coordinate outreach at these events

 

Education and Training

  • Regularly provide education/training on topics relevant to CCHI’s mission
  • Develop and coordinate skills-based training to aid members
  • Plan and execute forums and workshops for the community, members, and partners
  • Write, edit, and send bi-weekly e-newsletter on current healthcare issues
  • Create written and other materials as required

 

Member Relations

  • Build and expand an engaged, educated, and empowered network of consumers and organizations
  • Reach out to new constituencies and recruit organizational members, coalition partners, and individuals to build diverse support for healthcare reform
  • Provide staff support to the Colorado Springs chapter of CCHI
  • Serve as primary liaison to CCHI members, allies, and partners
  • Assist with annual membership renewal process 

 

Other responsibilities

  • Provide supervision, mentoring, and management for CCHI Healthcare Advocate
  • Staff CCHI board committees as necessary
  • Assist with grant writing, reporting, and other development tasks as needed
  • Participate in strategic planning and capacity building for the organization
  • Occasional conference and event planning

 

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience           

  • Two or more years organizing experience with a strong background in coalition work
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain collaborations with a diversity of people and constituencies 
  • Exceptional written and oral communications
  • Skilled at managing multiple priorities, working quickly and accurately
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently, meeting benchmarks and deadlines with little day to day supervision
  • Ability to absorb complex policy issues and present them concisely and persuasively for a general audience
  • Understanding of Microsoft Office; excellent computer skills
  • Flexible, team-oriented, values-driven

 

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience working/volunteering for a nonprofit advocacy organization
  • An understanding of the legislative process
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of healthcare issues
  • Knowledge of member-driven nonprofit organizations
  • Understanding of consensus decision-making
  • Experience with e-advocacy

 

This position requires some evening and weekend hours.  Regular travel in state (not always overnight) and some out of state travel is also necessary. 

 

Compensation and Benefits

The Outreach and Education Coordinator is a full-time, exempt position that reports to the executive director.  Salary range is $32,000 - $37,000, depending on qualifications and experience.  CCHI provides full benefits (health, dental, disability) and a competitive leave package.
