The fourth session of our Advocacy 101 series will focus on local and regulatory advocacy – such as non-legislative elected officials, boards and commissions, or county/city level government. While much happens “under the dome” at the state capitol, the decisions made at these other levels can have quick and serious impacts on our lives.
In this webinar, we will cover:
- Times when local or regulatory advocacy may be more effective than state-level lobbying.
- How regulatory advocacy differs from lobbying or other avenues, and how to approach it.
- Examples of working at the local level to enact change.

The third session of our Advocacy 101 series will focus on the Colorado state-level policymaking process. A lot of important work happens there, and it is often what people associate with their advocacy efforts. Lobbying is a key component of advocacy, and constituents have the right to talk to their elected officials about issues important to them–this webinar will talk about how you can lobby your elected officials! This event is intended to build upon Parts 1 and 2 of our series, but is also perfect for anyone interested in learning more about the Colorado legislative process and how to get involved.
In this webinar, we will cover:
- How a bill becomes a law in Colorado.
- What lobbying is, different types of lobbying, and how lobbying differs from other forms of advocacy.
- Tips and tricks for effectively lobbying your elected officials.

Advocacy Series Session #2: Audience and Message

The second session of our Advocacy 101 series will focus on two important parts of effective advocacy: knowing who your audience is and crafting your message and story. We will conduct a brief powermapping session, which is a way of identifying the people and groups who have the power to make decisions on issues that you care about. We will then talk about what makes certain stories and messages effective and practice crafting narratives that support the changes we wish to make. This event is intended to build upon Part 1 of our series, but is also perfect for anyone interested in thinking through an advocacy strategy for an issue that they find important!
In this webinar, we will cover:
- The basics of “powermapping,” or identifying the individuals, organizations, and groups that are important to making the change that you want to see.
- How to use your experience and knowledge to craft convincing stories and messaging for your audience
- The potential tradeoffs, how this strategy may or may not align with our values
